The Petrie Family

Hi,

I have tried twice now to make the jump to SP2 and each time have run into
problems with NIS2004 -- or at least that is where my problems occur. Each
time I have retreated back to SP1 and all is well. I'd really appreciate any
suggestions other than trash NIS. I know all its weaknesses but I still like
it and it normally works well for me. I also understand that lots of people
have gone to SP2 and NIS works well for them.

So, this is what goes on.

SP2 installs without any apparent problems. When it starts up I get the
usual messages from the Security Centre. I tell it to chill out as I will
look after my Firewall and anti-virus. When the system settles down I cannot
connect to the Internet either through Outlook Express or IE. I can connect
with Firefox, but not to encrypted pages. NIS seems to be running when I
look as Task Manager but there are no icons for it in the system tray. I can
request an AV scan of a file through Windows Explorer but it is very slow at
starting. When I look in the Windows Event Viewer, there are a number of
errors in the system events. They all say "The server
{833E4010-AFF7-4AC3-AAC2-9F24C1457BCE} did not register with DCOM within the
required timeout." This traces back to ccsetmgr.exe. Clearly something is
going on with NIS but I cannot figure it out or see it mentioned in the
newsgroups.

Can anyone kindly offer some help? Thanks.

Cheers,
Stephen

I would do a manual Live Update before attempting Sp2. The
way Live Update works, it doesn't always "Automatically" get
all the available patches. There is also a new version of Live
Update, you have to manually download. Available here:
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/files/lu/lu.html
You'll likely want to download the 2nd entry in the list.

I would keep running Live Update/Reboot until it (LD) shows
no more updates. It might take 2-3 iterations to get everything.

As to Service Pack2, I'm counseling Symantec users to not
disable Nav/Nis but instead boot to Safe Mode and install SP2
in a "Clean Environment".

if they updated their anti-virus once a day then they would
already have the patch.

virus's never rest they just keep dragging on.

probably got spyware too. but that is only an assumption.
