Norton Ghost 9 Drive Copy probelm

S

stewsk

I am using Ghost 9 to clone my main drive.
OS Win XP with SP1

It all seems to go according to plan until the cloned drive is set as
the master, one drive only installed at this time. When it boots it
gets to the XP opening screen (the one which should show the users
log in names) and locks up.

I have tried all the option combinations in setting the clone but the
result is always the same.

Can anybody help?

Unfortunately I can't help, but I can add that I'm having the same
problem, only it isn't with a cloned drive. I just installed
Systemworks 2005 and got a lock up on the welcome screen. After
fooling around with msconfig for a while I isolated the problem to
Norton Ghost. Basically if I let Ghost run, the system locks on the
welcome screen. if I disable Ghost, all runs normally. So far I've
seen no references to this problem anywhere but here.

Thanks Cicero,

From what I've seen on various forums no one can put a finger on the
root of this problem. We will just have to keep digging. I am coming
round to the idea that the problem lies somewher in XP rather than
the
ghosting.[/color:5117213573][/color:5117213573]

An fdisk /mbr from a Windows 98 bootdisk will do the trick!

I had this exact same problem. The way I finally fixed it was to go
into Control Panel>users and then "change the way users log on".
Instead of the welcome screen you have to type you username and
password in.

I then cloned the drive again, swapped the drives out, and logged onto
the new cloned drive with no problems.

After that I went and tried to change back to the Welcome screen (just
for fun) and it told me I couldn't do that because "Offline Files" was
enabled. It told me to click OK if I wanted to disable the "offline
files" feature, so I did, and after that I could switch back to the
Welcome screen logon without any problems.

I don't know why it worked this way, but it worked. Got my clone drive
working like a charm now!

Thanks.
I thought I had tried every possibility. Just goes to show there is
always something else to try. I spent most of yesterday at it - all
with the same result.
Yours sounds promising and when I get the time I'll try and post the
result.

I'm interested too at this Program...

The Problem is: ...you have SP1, friends of mine with XP SP2 installed
do not have such a problem.

Thanks also LAPTOPODO - I do not have SP2 installed but after I have
tried the previous sugestion, and if it should fail, I will install
SP2 and see what happens.

I will post all my findings in due
course.[/size:30bd76dcdb]

Well here goes on the last 3 pieces of advice:

Mickael Kimmer - fdisk /mbr did not work.

402 - did as you suggested and got past the welcome screen to the
logon window, logged on OK, and then it immediately went to logoff
screen. It then went endlessly round this loop.

and so to LAPTOPODO - then installed SP2 and went through the cloning
again with logon set as 402 suggested. Guess what it went to the
logon/logoff loop and went round and round.

So the upshot of all this is that I stll can't use Ghost 9 to clone a
drive.

Anyone else out there who might help is being eagerly awaited

I have recently "taste" Acronis TrueImage 8.0 ...it's much better and
faster than Ghost...

It has the option to create a boot CD that starts the start-up-console
in less than a minute :)

TrueImage lets you to create "incremental backups" ...backups that
are simply updates of your original backup ...this particularity
saves a lot of space in the HD :)

Have Fun :)
