Northbridge (I think??) fan blown/not working

I own a gigabyte 7VAXP ultra motherboard, and for a while now the
chipset fan has not been running. My brother also has a gigabyte
motherboard, and the chipset fan on his is not running either. Is
this normal? I have seen a few other posts regarding this, but they
reached indefinite conclusions. I took out my fan, and its completely
gummed up with crap, but my brothers works perfectly, yet still does
not run. Have they blown, or are they simply not meant to run unless
under very heavy strain? If they are broken, should I replace it with
another fan, or something else? Currently the fan is removed and the
heatsink is exposed. I presume that this is ok, since it will be
cooler than when the fan was on top not working (which it had been
for several months). I also removed the side of the case, just to
make sure it doesnt overheat. Could someone possibly answer a few of
my questions?

I have a GA-7VA board and the NB fan started dying in the first week.
Rather than go through an endless number of exchanges, I put a Zalman
fanless northbridge heatsink on the board.

I hate fans on motherboards. They're usually cheap and nasty.

What are you talking about??? If it "works perfectly" then that does not
fit with "still does not run". Please clarify.

Zalman fanless NB heatsink.

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my
neighbours from crime, and became the victim of it. Complications in
hospital following this resulted in a serious illness. I now need a bone
marrow transplant. Many people around the world are waiting for a marrow
transplant, too. Please volunteer to be a marrow donor:

thanks a lot for your reply.. I should have clarified: by working
perfectly I meant was not gummed up. Anyway, after some WD40 it now
just about works, but i think im going to follow your advice and bin
the cheap piece of crap. Thanks again for your reply.

keep the original heatsink and fan until your warranty expires. If
something else on the board dies you have to RMA it with the original
HSF unit.

how long is the warranty on gigabyte motherboards in general? Ive had
it for about 2 years.

Technically you're voiding the warranty by removing the HSF. I'm not
sure if it's three year warranty or not for that board, but IIRC all
gigabyte boards now have a three year warranty. You could ask on a
gigabyte newsgroup or email them directly:

just unplug it. it'll work fine as a passive cooler, honest.
