Normal.dot always changing

W

William Taylor

I have a problem almost every time I close word. It tries to save the
normal.dot template and says it has been changed.
Enviroment: Word is used as my Outlook editor. I run windows 2000 sp4, I use
Word 2002, not sure about service packs.

I'm not sure, but you can check, go to Tools > Options > Save (tab), if
"Prompt to save Normal template" is checked, uncheck it.

If you don't mind living dangerously, take Andre's advice. I would not.

The reason that you get this message is because something is changing the
normal.dot template. Maybe a badly written Add-in or using the Remove
Hidden Data tool.

See the KnowledgeBase Article "Known issues with the Remove Hidden Data
add-in for Office 2003 and Office XP" at:

Brilliant! :(
This will enable Word to play fast and loose with the normal.dot template
without curing the problem, which is almost certainly caused by a badly
written add-in. The usual suspects are the Works add-in and the Norton AV
Office plug-in.
If you are 'not sure' then either check the archives for the many similar
posts or don't answer at all.
No answer is better than a wrong and potentially damaging answer.
The Prompt to save normal.dot should always be checked. It is an essential
safeguard.

If it is not checked, it should be! Leaving that unchecked is like having a
smoke alarm with the battery removed.

See the MVP FAQ: <URL: http://www.mvps.org/word/> which is awesome!
