Non-standard font file use

I 'know' I recently read a help header about using non-standard fonts. The
header stated that just attaching the used letters, versus the entire
character set, would decrease the size of the e-mail.

I was hot on the trail of something else and only noticed it in passing. I
was 'pretty sure' it was about Outlook, but I can't seem to find it again.

I got the impression that if you used a "non-standard" font, maybe
non-standard system font, that you had 2 choices, to include the entire font
set or just the ones it needed to display properly on the other end.

This may be a flashback from my "younger" days but I can't imagine it
being about another e-mail program, I don't use them and wouldn't have looked
it up.

That is a feature of word and AFAIK, it only works in outlook if you use RTF
format (which only works with other outlook users).

Thank you. I found the option box I saw previously (that I mistook for a
header) now that I know what app to look at.

As I took another look into this, I found an option in Outlook 07.
Tools>Options> Mail Format (tab). Listed under HTML format is a check box,
"Rely on CSS for font formatting". I know what CSS is, but what is this
option saying? Could this be the answer I'm looking for?

All I'm trying to do is ensure that in certain cases my e-mail is displayed
with the font I specify. Nothing mysterious or sinister, just trying to use,
for example, a "Buffy TVS" or "Farscape" font with someone who I know is also
a fan.
