That's correct... Microsoft Word does not come with Windows XP. Word
can be purchased as a standalone program, or as part of the Microsoft
Office suite, or as part of Microsoft Works Suite (but not regular
Microsoft Works). Simple Word files can be opened with the Wordpad
program that comes with Windows XP. More complex Word files can be
opened with the free Word viewer program available for download from http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010449811033.aspx .
To add to what garfield-n-odie has said, *no* version of Windows has ever
included Word or Office. You may previously have bought computers that came
with some version of Office or Word installed, but it was not part of
Windows.
