No System Restore, Anti-Virus won't start, No Windows Update....

Windows XP and IE are operational, but lots of problems. My Anti-Virus won't
open at startup and all attampts to download and reinstall it are
unsuccessful... download quits about halfway every time and advice from
McAfee did not fix. Windows updates all fail to install. System Restore is
also unsuccessful, no matter what date I choose. I've had trouble with
spyware recently and wonder if my registry is messed up or if something
malicious is preventing my Windows security updates and my anti-virus. I have
Ad-Aware full version installed and the scans don't show anything now,
although I've removed plenty previously. An online scan for viruses at McAfee
says I'm clean. Do I need to reinstall/repair my Windows XP?

Scan your system online, since you have McCrappy and it's not working I would
use another company's scanning engine.
A link for free online virus and trojan scanners.

Incase you want a real anti-virus program (30 Day free trial)

System restore does this sometimes, the fix is to shut off S/R and
reboot, then turn S/R back on and reboot a second time the second reboot
should creat an auto checkpoint. (Make sure "task manager" is turned on)

If you choose to do a repair read the info at this site.

You will have to redownload all hotfixes when done.

I am running Windows ME and have this same problem. My system freezes, and
system restore would not work anymore. I ran the virus scan (McAfee), spybot,
scan disk, disk defrag - nothing was wong. Finally, my system wouldn't even
boot up and I had to boot from my floppy. I reinstalled Windows ME and
updated my IE. Everything worked fine. Then I tried to re-install McAfee
virus from their web site. Install went OK, but now my system is freezing
again. I have uninstalled McAfee again, but don't like working without the
anti-virus.

Any suggestions ?

If you are sure McAfee VirusScan is causing the problem, then you probably
shouldn't even use it. I recommend buying Norton AntiVirus. Or, if you
can't afford Norton AntiVirus, I recommend AVG Anti-Virus from GRISOFT,
s.r.o. or avast! Anti-Virus from Alwil. Please take my advice and see if
this helps, OK?

Or, on the other hand, if none of that works, then might I suggest doing
away with Windows ME and installing Windows XP. Consensus pretty much has
it that Windows ME was the reject of the family, because of so many
malfunctions. So, yeah, if none of those anti-virus solutions work, I
recommend that you just throw off Windows ME completely, and purchase a copy
of Windows XP.

Because, after all, Richard Urban is right. Problems related to Windows ME
should stay in the Windows ME discussion board -- which, I would imagine, is
full of complaints... ;-) Because, yeah, it's as I said in my previous
post, Windows ME is largely considered the reject of the entire Windows
family, because it had so many problems and all.
