No System Event Sounds

My event sounds have not worked for some time now (a few months) and I cannot
remember what happened/why they stopped working. The problem is when I go to
Sounds and Audio Devices Properties menu and click "Sounds" tab, I click a
sound and the little play button remains grayed out. I can hear just about
ANY audio but my system event sounds (the ding/startup/error/shutdown
etc...). I can listen to CD's, play music, even listen to the event sounds in
Windows Media Player. I have tried reinstalling the multimedia section of
Windows XP in the Windows components tab, didn't work. I have also tried
numerous other things. Can anybody assist me in fixing this problem???

Thanks

Unfortunatly none of this worked. (I had tried it before, and tried it again
just now and still nothing) One other thing to note is that my AOL Instant
Messenger sounds DO NOT WORK either. Perhaps a sound tag (if im using the
right terminology) is corrupt? Note again that I CAN play .wav sounds
normally and that when I try to preview a system sound the little play button
is "grayed out".

Thanks for the help

Hello!

I have exactly the same problem as you: I can perfectly play all audio
I want, but no system sounds play, and the preview button is grayed
out. Did you find a solution for your problem?

Thanx!
