Recently setup my new computer. I bought it custom online from ebay.
After completing all the setups, I have no sound.
I'm not sure what to do, I've tried using the device manager.
I noticed in the device manger that under 'other devices' there are three
with question marks next to them. (Multimedia Audio Controller, SM Bus, and
Video Controller...)something like this.....anyway, there's no info on these,
and they cant be installed or updated so I'm not sure if they're even the
problem.
I've also tried the Windows XP troubleshooting walkthrough, it led me here..

Please help. I'll provide whatever information that you may need.

Whoever built your computer didn't finish the job. They should
have installed all the correct drivers for your hardware. Did
they give you any CD's that may contain the drivers?

If not, and your computer has on-board audio and video then you
should be able to obtain the latest drivers from the
motherboard manufacturer's support web site.

The first thing you're going to have to do is determine what
motherboard they installed in your computer. Here are a couple
of methods to obtain that information.

1. Go to Start -> Run and enter msinfo32 in the Open box.
In the System Information utility, look under System
Manufacturer and System Model.

2. Download and install this free program.

Belarc Advisor
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Look in the Main Circuit Board section for the manufacturer and
model number of your motherboard.

Once you have this information you can go to the manufacturer's
web site and download drivers for the problem hardware devices.

If your system is using add-on cards for audio and video you'll
need to go to the manufacturer's web site for each of those
components to obtain the correct drivers.

If you get stuck, post back with information related to your
motherboard. Include manufacturer, model number and whether the
audio and video connectors are built into the motherboard. Also
include any information concerning add-on cards that are
installed on your system.

Good luck

I should have put more info in my post.
I'm not sure but I dont think the motherboard is even considered 'onboard'
it's an AM2, ECS RS485M-M. AWRDACPI

The PC builder did not supply me with the CD-ROM, just the manual.

Thanks for all your help. Hope to hear from ya.

Go to this web site and download the drivers listed under IDE,
Sound and VGA. Just click on where it says USA and save the zip
file to a handy location such as your My Documents folder.

RS485M-M (V1.0)
http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Pr...tailid=654&DetailName=Driver&MenuID=7&LanID=9

Once you extract all the files from the downloaded zip file,
look for a file named Setup.exe. Double click on it to start
the driver installation. I hope you're using cable or DSL for
your internet connection. The video driver is huge and would
probably take hours to download via dial-up.

Note: You might also want to download and install the LAN
driver from that site.

FYI, the term "on-board" means that the motherboard
incorporates your audio and video connections. If you look at
the back of your computer you'll see that the connectors for
your speakers and monitor are located in the same area where
you plug in the mouse and keyboard. On some computers, the
sound and video connectors are located on add-in cards which
are installed towards the bottom of the motherboard.

One other suggestion I'd make is to burn the files you download
to a CD. That way should you ever have to reinstall Windows
you'll already have the drivers on hand. That assumes that the
person who sold you this computer provided an XP installation
CD and a valid CD key.

Good luck
