I posted this recently and now can't find it, so reposting.
I used to enjoy playing a music tape and using the line in
on my sound card, recording the music to a file.
For some reason I can't hear the music anymore, I haven't
changed any settings. although I have tried both system
mixer and line in for a source, no difference.
So here is the puzzler, mine is a triple boot system
This problem occurs under W2k, when I boot to Windows ME
it works just fine??
if I choose to play the tape while I boot windows, I can
hear it, just until the splash screen appears then it cuts
off, any suggestions welcome.. Oh I'm using music match
for recording software, also tried WM for recording same
problem..

Since the hardware obviously works, it boils down to either the driver
or a setting. Did you "update" the driver recently? Knowingly or
otherwise(Windows Updates) Or install some software that changed the
configuration of the soundcard? Look in Sounds and Multimedia for
changes and also run DxDiag (Direct X) and see if it checks out.

The only change I'm aware of is this.
I was using a method of converting midi files to mp3
format.
it involves playing a song .mid using WMP and also using
Music match juke box, record the song using the system
mixer as the source and save it in MP3 format, this works
great, and yep it still works great after I discovered the
problem.

it was after I had recorded many mp3 songs using this
method, that I needed to record from a Cassette tape, and
save using the same MP3 format, Well shoot I get nothing
from the line input, and nothing from the system mixer
and well you read the previous description.

So far no piece of software that I have, gets any sound
from line input (tape player), it's only just before the
windows splash screen I hear the music, and then it cuts
off, so yeah I agree with you it has to be a setting
somewhere, within windows.

I will look to see if I have the diagnostic software you
mentioned, or is that contained within Direct X?

It's part of the DirectX install.
