No Sound - "Driver not started?"

I updated windows with "Windows Update" and also
downloaded a new version of palm desktop and lost all
sound. I am not sure what happened but uninstalled the
palm software and still have no sound.

My sound card shows it is installed but it says "Driver
is enabled but has not been started" under control panel
properties. It is not listed as a sound option under
Audio Devices. There are no conflicts listed and under
Device Manager all appear ok. How do I get it to operate?

I tried all the suggestions I found on this board and the WIN XP Hardware
board. None of them worked so I just reinstalled Win XP. That took care of
the problem.
