You need to go to the website of your sound card's manufacturer and get the
driver

then install it

If you don;t know what kind of soundcard you have

get HWinfo32 and it should ID it

(google for it)

I just had a similiar problem: AFter reformatting and reinstalling XP,
my sound wouldn't work at all but when I looked in the device mgr. ,
its showed my audio was installed and working properly. ?? So I tried
a lot of stuff.. updating driver , etc., then I got the idea to unplug
my speaker from back of computer and plug it back in. Voila! When I
looked at my monitor my audio screen was up (Realtek HD Audio Manager)
and asking to confirm that I plugged a speaker in. After confirming,
it played sound again.
