No Sound Device

I've been playing around again and for some reason I no longer have a sound
device installed and therefore, no sound for anything. In control panel -
sounds and audio devices - nothing is listed.
Can anyone tell this poor fool how to reinstall the sound and recording
device and even how I might have lost it in the first place?

Sorry for such a stupid question.

Somehow you probably uninstalled the drivers for your soundcard or
uninstalled the software that came with it which, in turn, removed or
corrupted the drivers? Find the CD with the drivers on it and put 'em back
on. I suppose that's where I'd start looking at least.

Thanks Galen,
Did what you said and put the original drivers & utilities CD back it, ran
it (I think) and still have "no audio device" next to the speaker icon. I
even ran the diagnostic from Dell that says it is working. Device mgr shows
no conflicts so I can figure out what is going on.
Any other ideas?
Thanks

Control Panel > Sounds applet... The audio tab? Default playback - does that
have anything selected in the drop down selection box? Better yet, is that
too blank?

Sounds a lot like my problem (no pun intended) in start/control panel/
(switch to classic view if you have not already)/administritive
tools/services scroll down and make sure "Windows Audio" is started and
that it is set to startup type automatic.

Good call, that's seldom seen but it is a potential cause and worth looking
into.
