No Shutting Down Notice

After installing SP2 when shutting down I don't get the usual notice.
It's safe to turn of PC , or something to that nature. Just a black
screen. Everything seems to be running well.

Hi,

That was a feature of Windows 98 not XP.

XP doesnt display any indicator that u can shut down the computer. It shuts
down by itself due to the power management i.e the computer turns it off when
the operting system shuts down.

I will have to disagree. I have seen many computers where when XP shuts down, it
brings up the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" screen. Kinda annoying
but it just means that the power management settings need to be changed.

Does your computer actually shut down when you tell it to or does the computer
keep running and just turns the video off?

Don't know if it really shuts down. How does one tell if the PC shuts
down or just the video?

Are any of the lights on the computer (tower) on? Can you hear the power
supply going? If not, then your computer is off. If you move the mouse
or press the keyboard (with the monitor on) does the computer wake up?
If yes, then the computer is on.

Mine goes to the black screen but Windows will not come back up when
the mouse is moved. Windows shuts down to the black screen, but the
power supply does not shut down. In other words, it shuts down but does
not power down. The problems is caused by SP2 not recognizing that my
motherboard is ACPI compliant...I think.

Have you examined the power options from Control Panel? Windows
understands ACPI. Perhaps your BIOS isn't as current as it should be.
Look on your motherboard mftr.'s website to see if there is an updated
one that solves your problem. Of course, one shouldn't flash a BIOS
unless the newer one is supposed to solve your problems. Take all
necessary precautions, including reading the instructions carefully, if
you decide to flash your BIOS.

Thanks. It's a quirk in my Gigabyte board; others with the same board
are not having a problem, according to that newsgroup. The latest bios
didn't cure the problem. There are no ACPI entries anywhere, unless I
reformat, reinstall, and hit F5 when it says hit F6, to manually select ACPI
Multiprocessor. Then I ACPI appears in device manager and all is well.
