"No Previous Version of Windows NT Installed"

This is a re-post, as I did not receive an answer to my
previous post.

I am trying to run a Windows XP Pro install on an IBM
Thinkpad TransNote. This is a "folio" type PC (sort of
a "pre-tablet" model) with no CD-ROM or floppy drive. It
currently has 98 SE installed. I have copied the XP Pro
CD to the hard drive (over the network) and am trying to
run the install from the hard drive. The idea was to
boot it up, rename the old windows directory (so I could
do a clean install rather than an upgrade), then run the
setup from from the CD files on the hard drive. It works
fine until I run the setup and it checks for a previous
O/S version, then it reports "No Previous Version of
Windows NT Installed" (Which is true, it's 98). This
happens even if I do not rename the windows directory,
and it is still bootable with 98. Any ideas why it
doesn't see the 98?
