I have VERY precious family photos that were downloaded and saved on my
computer. I have always been able to view them but in the last two weeks, I
keep getting a "No preview available" message. I tried copying the files to
my external hard drive and viewing them on my computer at work and I get the
same message.

One odd thing....newer photos that were uploaded within the last month are
viewable so that's what is strange about it.

PLEASE please please tell me that these files are not lost forever.

What happens if you try to view the files with a different application?

Don't have a different image viewing application -- get IrfanView (free)
from http://irfanview.com/

I tried opening them in Microsoft Picture manager and get the infamous Red X.

It's not looking good, but I'd still download and try IrfanView. If
nothing else, it's likely to give a somewhat better error message. If
you want to keep MS Picture and Fax Viewer as the default app for
opening your pictures, just be careful when you install IrfanView to
clear all of the file extensions to be associated with IrfanView (if you
don't do it during installation, you can always clear these associations
later).

What kind of image files are they (jpg? tif? something else?).

I take it that you don't have a backup (from when things worked) or the
original source from which you "downloaded" these pictures.
