No POST Beeps, No Video

I have been having problems with my AMD K6-2 550 MHz machine. Several
months ago, I installed a new CD-ROM drive. I did not touch anything
else, but when I booted up the machine, I got no POST beeps and no
display on the monitor. I uninstalled the drive and still nothing.
The machine was quite dusty, most notably the power supply. I blew
air inside the vents of the power supply, and voila, the machine
booted up properly.

Unfortunately, after moving the tower to another room in the house, I
get no beeps and no display. I tried booting up with just the CPU and
memory installed. I got the POST beeps indicating the video card was
not installed. I plugged the video card in and nothing happened. I
swapped in another video card and got the same result.

Could the cause of this problem be a faulty power supply? Keep in
mind that the machine worked perfectly yesterday before I moved it,
and since I had this problem before, I'm thinking there could be a
short in the power supply.

Any comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bryan

make sure the memory is seated properly.....in those older cases there was not much room to slide things around without 'tapping' a
module or two.
Anything is a guess, make sure that the plug is securely in the power supply. and the voltage select is all the way in the proper
position.

does the cpu fan keep spinning and the keyboard lights flash? If your cpu
fan is shot, the mb may be shutting down right away (1-2 sec)

Do some basic checking first. When you power on, do the hard drives start
spinning. You can hear them as they whine up (but might need the case
opened to hear them). Do the LEDs flash on the keyboard? Does the power
LED on the case front come on?

Yes, the CPU fan is running. I haven't checked the lights on the
keyboard.

I just found it odd that I got beeps when the video card was removed.
I tried reseating the memory too but with no results.

I'm convinced it's the power supply though because I had the problem
before and somehow was able to make things work by blowing out the air
supply. I don't think it's the motherboard because the computer
worked before I moved it.

Any more ideas?

Thanks,
Bryan

Hi, Bryan

It's the Power Supply definitely, I have a similar problem with my old
system : if I just plug in a new hard drive, or a new cpu fan : PUFF !!! ,
sometimes it doesn't boot, no signal !!!

My PSU is 230W, not enough, or maybe I must clean it up - it is full of
dusty also, must try this out

the check for the video card is probably before the mb does other checks on
bootup, then whatever is fried is later on.

the boot after the ps cleaning could've been a lucky one if your hw has
probs
