Hmm, as I recall, you should only need to click the user name if no password
was set. If you are receiving an error with regard to "specified domain"
that might indicate when you set up XP you set it up as a system that is
going to log on to a domain as opposed to a workgroup system. If that's the
case, you need to start over. I'll provide instructions at the bottom of
this post.
For the sake of getting you through this a little more quickly, ordinarily
the procedure for getting out of the situation, assuming system was not
setup to log on to a domain is to treat this the same as a lost password as
follows:
If you have XP Pro on your computer, at the log in screen type
ctrl-alt-delete
twice. In the user account type administrator, leave the password blank and
press enter. You likely didn't create a password for this hidden account
during setup and if the computer was purchased with XP pre-installed it
doesn't likely have one either,
If you have Home, boot into Safe Mode (F8 after the post test and before
Windows starts. Once Windows starts loading, you've missed it and will have
to try again). You'll have an option to log on as Administrator. Again,
the same procedure, you'll be asked to log in to get into safe mode, type
administrator, leave the password blank and press enter.
This will get you in. Then go to Control Panel, user accounts, select the
specific user and select change password. Once you've changed the password
it would be advisable to create a Password Reset Disk by clicking "Prevent a
Forgotten Password" link in the left pane.
If the above doesn't work, your system has not been properly setup and when
you run setup below, when it comes to the screen about whether this computer
will be a part of a workgroup or a domain, choose workgroup. I believe
that's the option, just be sure not to choose domain.
Boot with the XP CD in the drive. When you see the message on the boot
screen to "Press any key in order to boot from the CD," do so.
After loading drivers and files, you should be taken to a screen with
the following:
To Setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To Repair a Windows XP Installation using Recovery Console press R.
To Quit setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
In your case, press ENTER.
Agree to the License agreement by pressing F8.
You will then be taken to a screen with two options.
To repair the selected Windows XP installation press R.
To continue installing a fresh copy of Windows XP without repairing,
press ESC.
This will bring you to a partition map where you
can delete, create and format partitions.
Select the drive you wish to format, delete the partition, then create a new
partition, format as desired and continue with XP installation
