The explanation that students don't use Outlook for not including it in the
student edition is complete nonsense. First, they do; and second if they
don't giving it to them would make them more likely to use it in the future.
If it really isn't included I will start using Thunderbird. Whoever made this
decision based on that bizare justification should be fired because he/she
will have cost Microsoft future customers who will have been driven into the
arms of Open Source.

they based the decision on market studies - a large % of buyers of the
student / home edition do not use outlook. outlook standalone will cost
around $100 - and those who do use it can but it separately or get the
standard version which includes it, but costs more. buying student version
and standalone outlook will be cheaper than buying office standard.

if thunderbird meets your needs, by all means use it. It's a fine email
client if you only need email, and frankly, it would meet the needs of many
student and home buyers (although I think most use OE). If you are unwilling
to buy student and home suite and outlook, then use open office or your
current version of office - no one is forced to upgrade or buy office 2007.
(proof is in the numbers still using office 97 and 2000.)

Also has a reasonably good calendar and tasks add-in which while not /quite/
as professional as Outlook, is still very good considering it is still
under development......
