no mail icon in control panel

Anyone -

I'm desperate for help (after spending 3 hours 41 minutes straight on the
phone with someone from microsoft support and no results). I'm using vista
ultimate and office 2003 pro.

Apparently in Vista, there is supposed to be a mail icon in the control
panel. However, there wasn't one in mine so the microsoft support guy tried
to get it to reappear. I eventually gave up and did a complete system
recovery yesterday, but there is still no mail icon.

Can somebody please tell me where the mail icon should be and what it is
for? Also, I would really appreciate any suggestions about how to get it to
appear or find it.

Thanks for your time.

Thanks. Another quick question - what is and how do I get to the x86 control
panel rather than the regular control panel (or are they the same thing)?
I'm beginning to wonder why the support guy was so intent on finding that
mail icon.

Also, are you using Office? If so, which version? Have you tried
connecting live hotmail to Outlook?

Thanks again,

Scott

Do you mean the "Classic View"? Click on the Classic View link in the left hand
panel of Control Panel Home.

Sorry, not using Outlook or Office (just Word). Also, not using Windows Live
Mail (replacement for Live Hotmail).

The Mail icon will appear in Control panel only if you have Outlook installed.

Thanks for your message Gary. I'm using vista ultimate, office 2003 pro, and
even after I install outlook there is no mail icon. My problems initially
started when I downloaded the outlook connector beta. In order to properly
set that up, I need the mail icon in the control panel (which I don't have).
I tried to set it up anyway, it didn't work, and then outlook completely
stopped working, which is why I initially called microsoft. They spent quite
some time trying to "restore" the mail icon, including renaming mapi.dll
files and other things - nothing worked. So I tried to restore the system to
an earlier time, but that didn't work. I ended up doing a complete format
and system recovery to the original settings, but after installing outlook I
still have no mail icon.

Any ideas?

Scott, I'm not an Outlook expert. Most of the Outlook experts hang
out in the microsoft.public.outlook.general newsgroup, so you will
get more help by posting there. I am crossposting this to that newsgroup.

I appreciate your help. Another 1.5 hours on the phone with Microsoft
support tonight resolved the (non) issue.

Anyway, thanks again for your time. Have a great week.

Glad you got it resolved. I shy away from X64 issues precisely because
it takes special expertise. I have my hands full with X86 issues. :)

So what was the solution to not having a mail icon in the control panel.
It's fine if they want to move it somewhere else, but they could at least
tell us where they put it. I have to get into the profiles and set up the
laptop for exchange. I'd can't do that while outlook is open and with no
mail icon, I have no earthly idea what they expect me to do. I am running
Vista Ultimate with Outlook 07 on a 64 bit system.

Please remove microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail from the cross-posting
on future responses.

Thank you.

Did you ask this in one of the Outlook NGs as previously recommended (this
one is dedicated to Vista Windows Mail)? microsoft.public.outlook.general
