no longer able to burn cd's nor DVD's

for some reason my xp pro has stopped letting me burn cd's and DVD's
it's fully patched and all service packs, the only change I did was to
disable IIS
this should mess with burning CD's one bit.
I tried removing and reinstalling EMC8 no joy, I left out the drag and drop
portion, that never did work with my pc.
it's not the drive, it just won't even show the burn file option on the menu.
when I choose to copy files and then paste them to the burner, I never get
the option, but if I choose to explore the burner, it shows the files (on a
CDRW) and shows me the option to burn, so whats the deal?

I'm stumped

Maybe do a clean-clean install of EMC

Your burner may have failed. A good way to test is to boot into another
operating system such as a Linux live CD (if you have two optical
drives) or Linux running on a USB key. If you can't burn in Linux, you
know the drive is bad and needs to be replaced. Or if you have another
desktop machine, put the drive in it and see if you can burn there.

I did that, no joy! it appears to start the copy, ie the screen flashes
quickly the icon
showing the files moving, but then it's gone, and of course the files don't
get copied.

I do have a dual boot system, with w2k pro, I will try that later tonight.
something has certainly changed within XP, as it takes a new CDRW and
somehow marks it as full, when trying to copy files that only total 40 meg or
so.
the DVD drive won't read new cd's it says put a disc in the drive.

I have confirmed it's something to do with wxp, w2k burns cd's just fine,
using EMC 8
