No logon servers available...

Help!!

I have tried every trick I could find on this
site to network my Win2k laptop with my XP desktop,
but have not been able to get beyond the dreaded
"There are no logon servers available to service the
logon request" message.

My laptop is part of a domain at work, and I have given
the desktop workgroup the same name, replicated logon
IDs and passwords, etc.

I've tried everything I could find on this site, but have
not seen anything advice regarding the "no logon server"
message. It's the only shred of hope left...

Do you mean "desktop workgroup the same name" or did you intend to type
"domain"?
If you did mean workgroup then it's not the same thing as a domain.
What version of XP are you running on the desktop?
Are you using a crossover cable between pc and laptop?
After you cancel the error and go into windows, can you see the network ok?

Thanks for your response. I have the two machines
connected through a linksys router, but do not have a high
speed connection so I have configured as a standalone
network. Could this be a problem, possibly with with ICS?

I am running XP Pro Version 5.1. I was told by the IT
guys at work (who all do this with no problem, by the
way) that it doesn't matter if it's a domain or workgroup
and they told me to set up the desktop in a workgroup
with the same (workgroup) name as my domain name at work.
Is this a problem? I didn't think I could set up a domain
on the XP Pro desktop...

I get the error whenever I try to look at the desktop
from the laptop. I can see the desktop computer in
Network Neighborhood, but when I click on it to view the
shared drives, I get the "no logon server" error. I get
the same error if I try to add a network printer (which
is cabled to the destop) to my laptop.

I can ping both computers by name and IP address, so the
physical link seems to be OK. I have disabled the
Internet firewall on the XP box and have no firewall that
I could find on the win2000 Pro laptop.

Thanks.

Hi Powderboy

Please read this page that explains domains v workgroups
http://windows.about.com/library/weekly/aa061399.htm

The logon server will be the NT/Win2000(3) server at your workplace that you
log on to when you're there.
Your laptop is not finding the domain server when it's at home, hence the
error message.

Unless you've got an NT/2000 server running then assigning a domain is
pointless. The only time your laptop needs to be configured as part of a
domain is while you're at work. You need to remove the domain info when
you're at home and set the workgroups for laptop and pc to be the same.
