No internet connection after XP Pro upgrade

I just upgraded from XP home to Xp Pro edition with SP2 and now every time I
try to connect to the internet, it locks up and doesn't connect. I have to
use use the program manager to end the program because it stops responding
when I click on the X button to close. Then that takes a long time to wait to
end. Everything was fine prior to the upgrade. I use a broadband lan
connection. I can't even click on the help button to see what version of IE I
have, nor can I even get to the MS update page to download any fixes. I tried
system restore with no luck. I reinstalled XP pro with no luck either. Please
help!! Thanks
