Floppy drive does not use the PCI bus. It uses its own controller and needs
to be correctly configured in the BIOS.

Normally. floppy controllers are part of the motherboard as
well as two IDE controllers and three or more PCI slots for
add-in cards. It is possible that you have a computer with
a PCI card that adds more IDE and floppy controllers,
perhaps a RAID option.

You can download a free program called EVEREST from
www.lavalys.com that will scan your computer and report the
hardware configuration.

You can use Device Manager to remove the floppy controllers
and drives and then redetect hardware changes. Rebooting
will begin the detection or you can use device manager.

Make sure the floppy controller connected to the drive is
enabled in the BIOS and that the cable and power wire is
securely connected.

thanks for that. i havent changed anything with the floppy drive. the only
thing i can think that might have done soemthing to it is that my comp
crashed last month and i had to reinstall xp. could this be why my floppy
drive is in device manager and not my computer?

Go the Lavalys site www.lavalys.com and download the EVEREST
program. It will tell you the exact make and model of the
motherboard. Most likely, you need to download and install
the correct motherboard drivers.

Maybe because computers were designed by and for people who
knew what they were doing.

If you tell use what BIOS you have or at least the actual
make/model of computer somebody can hold your hand.

A reinstall of XP. Did you reinstall the latest harware drivers,
especially
for the chipset? Have you made all the windows updates.
