No DUal Boot but it did....

Hello,

I installed Vista yesterday on a seperate 160GB SATA drive only to realize
it decided to try and install on my existing XP drive which is lacking the
total space needed to install. So after all the confusion Vista finally
placed itself onto the correct 160GB SATA and not my 200GB SATA which houses
my XP Pro. So at first I had the option to dual boot but I reinstalled a
fresh install of XP Pro back onto the 200GB as more space was being used by
hidden Vista install files when it tried to install initially over my old XP.
Well the XP install went well but now I directly boot into XP without even
getting an option to choose Vista or XP. Any reasons or clues why this is?

Bt reinstalling XP you have overwritten the Vista boot manager.

Reboot your pc with the Vista dvd, on the install page you will see a link
on the bottom left for System Recovery/Repair. Click on that, and then
select Startup Repair.

I think after running the startup wizard it will boot Vista, but may not
give the option to boot XP.
If you don't get the boot menu after the startup repair then use the
following commands from an elevated command prompt to restore it:

bcdedit -create {ntldr} -d "Windows XP<or whatever you want to call it>"
bcdedit -set {ntldr} device partition=x: <where X: is the drive where XP is
installed>
bcdedit -set {ntldr} path \ntldr
bcdedit -displayorder {ntldr} -addlast
restart

You can also get away without running the startup repair by putting the dvd
in the drive and running this command from an elevated cmd prompt:
x:\boot\bootsect.exe -nt60 all

I've had to do this on a couple of different pc's now and it works like a
charm.

Hi,
I read that you need to use a third party partician such as particician
magic. I lost my dual boot too. I havent reinstalled vista as I need to
upgrade my soundcard first.

I just tried that and it told me there was an unrepairable error and could
not continue with the start up repair =( I also tried the command promt in
the replay below yous with no luck either. This sucks as I now cannot get
into Vista at all =(
