No detail in shadowed areas

When scanning 35 mm slides with my Epson Perfection 2400 Photo unfortunately
I see little or no details at all in shadowed areas such as faces, landscape
etc.
I'm testing with a variety of sw including Vuescan trial version and have
also changed the calibration of two screens, a LCD one and a flat one, with
no improvement
Is it possible I'm wrong in some step of the procedure?
Or finally is it better for me to buy a dedicated film scanner?

It's time for you to buy a dedicated film scanner.

There's nothing wrong with your scanning workflow. If you want quality,
get a dedicated film scanner.
