Well, I was messing around earlier, and right-clicked on my desktop, and
chose to not show desktop. Now I dont see any desktop icons, and I cant click
on the desktop or anything, how do I get my desktop back?

Thanks

If you used TweakUI to mess this up (I have BTDT), use TweakUI to fix it,
see below.

If you didn't use TweakUI, see this...
"Show Desktop icons" and other options missing in the Desktop right-click
menu
http://www.winxptutor.com/showdesktopicons.htm

Show Desktop Icons will not display if you have unchecked:
Allow Web content to be added to the desktop
in TweakUI.

Your Desktop Icons Are Missing in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330170

If this is unchecked:
TweakUI
[+] Explorer
Allow Web content to be added to the desktop
[[If this is unchecked then the ability to add Web Content to the desktop
will be disabled.]]

You will *not* see:

Right click Desktop | Properties | Desktop tab | Customize Desktop button |
Web tab

Or....

Right click Desktop | Arrange Icons By | Show Desktop Icons

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r
Value Name: NoActiveDesktop
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = Allow Web content to be added to the desktop
1 = Don't allow Web content to be added to the desktop

Also, *.jpg files will not be listed in...
Display Properties | Desktop tab | Background

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Edit the registry (Start > Run > and type "regedit.exe" without the quotes.)
Navigate to this key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]

Locate and double-click "HideIcons" in the right-hand pane. Change the Value
to 0 (zero). Log off and log on to make the necessary changes. Now your
Desktop Icons should be visible. If you still cannot right-click on the
desktop then post back.

A few different options will cause this.

1. Right-click on Desktop and place a checkmark for "Lock Web Items on
Desktop" in the "Arrange by Icons" submenu.

2. Right-click on My Computer and select Properties, then select "Advance"
tab, "Performance" Settings button and check off "Use drop shadows for icon
labels on the desktop".

3. Right-click on Desktop and choose Properties, "Desktop" tab, "Customize

then uncheck.

I am not sure why the blue behind the text is not being removed, maybe it is
time to perform a System Restore to an earlier day such as yesterday if your
problems started today.

If you used TweakUI to mess this up (I have BTDT), use TweakUI
to
fix
it,
see below.

If you didn't use TweakUI, see this...
"Show Desktop icons" and other options missing in the Desktop
right-click
menu
http://www.winxptutor.com/showdesktopicons.htm

Show Desktop Icons will not display if you have unchecked:
Allow Web content to be added to the desktop
in TweakUI.

Your Desktop Icons Are Missing in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330170

If this is unchecked:
TweakUI
[+] Explorer
Allow Web content to be added to the desktop
[[If this is unchecked then the ability to add Web Content to
the
desktop
will be disabled.]]

You will *not* see:

Right click Desktop | Properties | Desktop tab | Customize
Desktop
button
|
Web tab

Or....

Right click Desktop | Arrange Icons By | Show Desktop Icons

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r
Value Name: NoActiveDesktop
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 = Allow Web content to be added to the desktop
1 = Don't allow Web content to be added to the desktop

Also, *.jpg files will not be listed in...
Display Properties | Desktop tab | Background

In StrikerBack <[email protected]> hunted and
pecked:
Well, I was messing around earlier, and right-clicked on my
desktop,
and
chose to not show desktop. Now I dont see any desktop icons,
and
I
cant
click on the desktop or anything, how do I get my desktop
back?

Thanks

Forget my previous post about using System Restore, I just reproduce what is
causing this.

Perform these actions:

Right-click on Desktop and choose Properties, "Desktop" tab, "Customize
Desktop" button, "Web" tab and check "Lock Desktop Items". Click OK then
Apply. Go back and uncheck "Lock Desktop Items"..

I am not sure why the blue behind the text is not being removed, maybe it
is time to perform a System Restore to an earlier day such as yesterday if
your problems started today.

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > select "System
Restore"

You could also launch System Restore by the typing the following in the
Run dialog box,

%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

A few different options will cause this.

1. Right-click on Desktop and place a checkmark for "Lock Web Items on
Desktop" in the "Arrange by Icons" submenu.

2. Right-click on My Computer and select Properties, then select
"Advance"
tab, "Performance" Settings button and check off "Use drop shadows for
icon labels on the desktop".

3. Right-click on Desktop and choose Properties, "Desktop" tab,
"Customize
Desktop" button, "Web" tab and if there is any check marks for any web
pages then uncheck.

I got one other question, for some reason, there is now a highlighted
blue
color over my icons text on the Desktop, how do I take this off?

Thanks so much, it worked!

:

Edit the registry (Start > Run > and type "regedit.exe" without
the
quotes.)
Navigate to this key:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]

Locate and double-click "HideIcons" in the right-hand pane.
Change
the
Value
to 0 (zero). Log off and log on to make the necessary changes.
Now
your
Desktop Icons should be visible. If you still cannot right-click
on
the
desktop then post back.
