No Desktop after Logon

Christoph Gartmann

Hello,

after running "Microsoft Update" via IE 6 under Win2000 Pro I have the
following problem:

Windows is starting up, I get the login box, it tells "loading personal
settings", then "applying personal settings" and then nothing more. I have
a background screen but no "Start" button or any other desktop icons.

I realize that "explorer.exe" is not running. I read Knowledge Base article
256194 but this didn't resolve my problem. The problem applies to all users.
I am still able to open task manager and then run "cmd.exe". What else could I
try?

Regards,
Christoph Gartmann

Greetings --

Sounds like you may have a corrupted/damaged user profile, either
the one you're using to login, or the Default Users. Try logging in
with a different account. If you get the same results, try replacing
the Default Users profile with a known good copy from a
similarly-configured machine, or from backup.

Tried that, shows the same phenomenon.

How do I do that: replacing the profile is no problem. But how do I set the
proper protection from the command line?

As I wrote in my first posting: this didn't solve my problem. I found a cross
reference that mentioned checking the protection of the system root. But again,
how do I do this if I have only the command line?

Hi Christoph

I had just the same problem as you have,

I also try the Q256194 method, and it did not help,
but I noticed that the shdocvw.dll file was lost , so I replaced that one,
and
all the files in the Q256194 list from the service pack installed on the pc.

After that I try to start explorer again , and it worked !!

Good luck..

Kind Regards
Christer
