No defragmentation graphic or progress report in Vista

All users urgently need a solution from Microsoft on this.
It's impossible to use Defragmentation in Vista because there is no progress
report.
We are maybe about to turn off the computer and the defragmentation screen
is dead, standing there with no results whatsoever.
How do we know how much is left for it to finish?
How do we know how defragmented the hard drive was or is?
How do we know is working?
Please we all need you to do us a favor.
Find that person that decided not to include a graphic or progress report on
the Vista defragmentatioin utility. Find him or her and fire them. Now.
And then go ahead and immediately correct this problem with a patch.

Not quite all users.

I have in the distant past used 'fire and forget' defrags, Rabbit under
Vax/VMS comes to mind. Nevertheless when I first ran Windows 3 defrag I
too watched the blinking squares and sectors moving about but when I had
seen how it behaved I stopped watching - it just wasn't that exciting,
to use a tired old analogy it was like watching paint dry.

I now use the One Care defrag on XP and Vista, sometimes this doesn't
complete in one session but that doesn't matter to me. My disk occupancy
on the PCs is kept so low that it's probably overkill anyway. The
defrags
are scheduled to run when none of my PCs will be in use, I am probably
not in the room and possibly not in the house.

The only point I am making is that other people have other requirements
and other working methods and thus come to different conclusions.

It doesn't finish, it keeps defragging as needed.

Do you need to know?
It isn't going to break just because it has some fragmentation.

How do we know is working?

That is a good question.
You could run the command line defrag and get a report on how fragmented it
is.

Macs defrag and don't have a progress indicator, I haven't noticed a huge
outcry for some useless graphics.

Maybe the best thing M$ could do is a defrag screen saver.
That way it keeps the people that want pretty moving blocks happy and
doesn't interfere with the real work.

Not me. Seems like a silly idea, in fact. I've better things to do
than watch such a display.

That's not at all true. Not having a silly graphics display in no way
hinders ability to defrag a partition.

Task Manager? Or, better yet, simply let Vista do scheduled defrag's
at night when no one's using the computer?

What does it matter?

How do we know is working?

Is your performance steadily decreasing? If not, it's either not
necessary, or it's working.
