No debugger found after SP2 install

My wife recently installed Windows XP SP2. Since that installation, the
machine appears to have a problem with the JIT debugger.

Now, if she goes to update and tries to download and install "Microsoft .NET
Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1" she ends up with a failed installation. A
window pops up declaring "No debugger found" followed by another saying
"Registered JIT debugger is not available.

She also has a problem with some HP all-in-one software. HP support told her
to uninstall and reinstall the software. She runs into the same debugger and
JIT debugger warning as when trying to install the .NET software

Evidently something happened to the debugger when SP2 was installed.

Suggestions on how to correct this problem will be greatly appreciated!

You might install xp cd,exit the info page, then go to run, type:cmd In cmd
type:Sfc /Scannow When the bar graph is thru type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree
to restart,then type:EXIT Restart computer,remove cd.You can also re-install
the debugger, try search at microsoft, type:debugger Youll want version 5.6
i believe it is.

I'll give Chkdsk with the F switch a try this weekend... after my wife has
had a chance to back-up all her data files to an external drive. I've only
seen things go sour one time in 18 years, but there's no sense in taking any
chances!

I have now tried the chkdsk routine with negative results. The problem
remains when trying to install the update to "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1
Service Pack 1."

All the "debugger" links on Microsoft look like they're meant for
developers. I didn't see anything that might apply to a common home user.

The antivirus software has been kept up to date. Nothing has been detected,
and a new scan of the system has nothing to report. Additionally, Spybot
S&D has been run.

Any other suggestions?

Just a follow up to my original post for those who might search newsgroup
archives with this problem.

With the assistance of Microsoft's support staff the problem was solved.
It's too detailed to post, and specifics may vary. However, it essentially
involved manually uninstalling .NET Framework 1.1 and then reinstalling it.
That cleared up the problem with the .NET Service Pack installation as well
as the problem with the HP software installation.

It took a few emails back and forth as we tried to zero in on the source of
the problem and its solution, but the tech support was excellent... and
free!

On the other hand, the tech support from HP was utterly useless. Their
software depends on .NET Framework, but they didn't have a clue that that
might be causing the problem.

Kudos to Microsoft!
