No dates before 1900?!

A friend is organizing some data in Excel, which includes letters written in
the 1800s. So there are the correspondents, notes, etc., and the dates.

She told me Excel doesn't handle dates earlier than 1900!

I found this hard to believe, so I tested it. Sure enough, if I put a date
1900 or later, it allows me to format the cell any way I want, calculates
the day, whatever. With a date earlier than that, it accepts the date, but I
can't do anything with it.

Any way around this?

Thanks!
