No Connection Status - Since late April

I've been having some trouble with XP Pro (my home PC, and another
guy's, but not my win2000 work PC).
The status of my network connections seem to have disappeared. The
network notification in the system tray is gone. And in Network
Connections, if I click to get Status, nothing happens. :(

IPCONFIG/all confirms that the networking connections are working OK on
their own, but the statuses aren't functioning.
I had thought it was just a case of my PC playing silly buggers, until
Alan at work asked me about exactly the same issue. And a day later
informed me that doing a system restore back two weeks fixed his PC.
I'm determined to get to the bottom of this though. Not just take the
easy way out.
Any ideas?

Try this: You hadn't mentioned this aspect so please check that...

On your network connection (like Local Area Connection) bring up the
Properties page. Toggle the checkbox option on the General tab for "Show
icon in notification area when connected".

Does that help?
