Hi,

I can't get my laptop to display color when i try to do a external
display to my TV using S-video cable to RCA of the TV. My laptop (compaq
presario) have a 7pin S-video jack but i'm using a 4pin s-video cable . Is
this the problem why i get no color display on TV? I heard that the 7 pins
cable are mostly used for dell computer , and i have problem getting one in
most of the video shops here,as they only have 4pin type.

S-Video only uses 4 pins. Your laptop probably has an
adapter cable that plugs into the "7 pin S-Video" jack and
provides an S-Video output and some other connections.

Your problem may be where you are "using S-video cable
to RCA of the TV". The adapter could be loose or bad.
You should check the entire series of connections or switching
for the S-Video signal, as loss of the color is often the result of
an incomplete connection.

The cable and the laptop are brand new so connection is good. I saw come
where in a web that ATI cards have 7 pin s-video jack cause there is an
addition pin in the center compare to the 4 pin type. Just wondering what
does the center pin ofthe 7 pin s-video does on compaq presario.

"New" is no guarantee, you should check for good connections
and switching, wiggle the cables and repeat the switching a few
times.

The ATI cards (at least the current ones.) use a 9 pin I/O
adapter. You should contact Compaq as to their
implementation of the ATI video chipset, and a description
of the pins functions.

If you're connecting to RCA (composite) directly from s-video output
without actually downgrading the signal, you will always get a b&w
image. Reason being, s-video carries separate signals (for increased
quality) for color (chrominance) and brightness (luminance) and RCA
(composite) carries only a combination of the two; only luminance signal
gets through.

What you need to do is either get a s-video to composite converter, or
via software tell your graphics card to use composite format for its
TV-output. How this is done (or even possible) depends on your graphics
card and drivers. What are you using?

PS. Even better quality is achieved using Component (RGB), which carries
separate signals for different color channels aswell.
