No blank page number when using Odd Page Section number

Using Word 2002:

I'm wrestling with a page number missing doing an Odd Page Section.

I have main document text ending on page 21. I have an Appendix that I
want to start on the next odd page, page 23, so I insert an Odd Page
Section Break at the beginning of the Appendix first page. Word then
shows page 21 numbered okay, then inserts a blank page with no page
number then has the Appendix starting on numbered page 23. So the odd
page placement for the Appendix worked, except Word didn't number page
22. I would appear that it doesn't include the footer on the inserted
blank page.

When I read the explanation for an odd Section Break in Special Edition
Using Word 2002 it says, "As Odd Page Section break starts the new
section on the next odd-numbered page. If the section break falls on an
odd numbered page (which in my case it does), Word leaves the next
even-numbered page blank (which it does). My problem here is that Word
does leave the next page entirely blank and does not include the page
number. For the blank page to be numbered I inserted a page break ahead
of the Odd Section break. This sort of defeats the whole purpose and
doesn't seem right. Might be doing something wrong or have a
misunderstanding?.

Is it correct that Word will insert a completely blank page with no
page number?

If not I'd appreciate your help.

TIA

Hi Tom,

What you've seen is indeed Word's normal behavior. The designers
assumed that if there's no text on the even page, there shouldn't be a
header/footer either.

The article at
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/tblsfldsfms/InsEvnPgEndChap.htm describes
how to hide a page break inside a conditional field. The example also
includes the typical notice "page is intentionally blank" but you can
leave that out.

Hi Tom,

To force Word to insert the required even page, but only when the last
'true' page of the section is odd, insert the following field on the last
line of the section, with a normal 'next page' section break. Preferably,
put the field in its own paragraph with 0 before/after spacing and a
1pt-high font:
{IF{=MOD({PAGE},2)}= 1 {QUOTE 12}}

Cheers
PS: Create the field braces '{}' with Ctrl-F9 - you can't just type them in.
PPS: I'll leave you to figure out how it works!

I'm having a similar problem, in that I used odd page
breaks but can't seem to get Word to insert a blank page.
How did you do it?

Same as for Tom, except the MOD test is for a 0:
{IF{=MOD({PAGE},2)}= 0 {QUOTE 12}}

Cheers
