no background color on webpages

I have had this system for about 6 weeks and have
recently realized that web pages are not displaying
background color or tiled background images with my
browser. I realized this upon working through an
html/xhtml lesson book. All code that I have written
had worked for me up to this point. I simply could not
get the body bgcolor or backdround to appear on my
webpage. I then started looking for a webpage showing
background color or texture in my browser. I can't find
any, and I have found pages with type so light in color
that it is unreadable. There must be a dark background
missing. I don't know if there is a IE software problem
or if I have screwed up some setting. I am fried and
don't have a clue.
