No auto highlighting-let me select exactly what I highlight!!!

I HATE the feature of auto highlighting - in Word or Word-based programs (ie
Outlook email), whenever I go to highlight text, Word ALWAYS tries to guess
what I'm highlighting and ALWAYS is wrong - leaving out words I'm trying to
grab or extending the highlighting to words I don't want. It is so so
annoying and I have to highlight text 3 or 4 times before I can get what I
want. There may be a way to turn this off, but why not default so when you
highlight something, you highlight exactly what you want, instead of the
program guessing and making the highlighting jump all over the place?!?!
This is such a waste of time!!! Thanks.

You might do better if you go to Tools > Options > Edit tab and uncheck
"When selecting, automatically select entire word"
