It's a PPT 2003 Viewer thing. See John Langhans's response at

I notice the speaker icon on the slide, only when I press that Icon the
sound
file plays(this case using PP Viewer 2003), the strange thing that when I
run
the presentation using the Office PowerPoint 2003 it works fine.
one more thing, I try to open and resave some of the presentations it
works
perfectly, but some of the PPT files contain read-only embedded fonts so
these kind of PPT files can't be edited and as long I'm not owner of
these
presentations I can't do any thing.
I noticed also in the Custom Animation window; the external sound files
been
set to work as "After Previous" and they ordered to be the last custom
animation in every slide, I would like to clarify that these external
sound
files are not music so the purpose of their existence to describe the
slide
by voice. these presentations basically are lectures distributed by a
Magazine for free.
:
You may need to reset your sounds for the PPT 2003 Viewer, as PPT
2002/2003
handle sound a little differently than do 97/2000.

I have the same issue, I try to use power point viewer 97 the sound
works
but
not with 2003 viewer..
in my case I have arabic text in the presentation, in 2003 viewer it
displayed correctly, but using 97 viewer it dose not displays the text
correctly.
:
I am including a wma/mp3 song from a file in my presentation. The
song
plays fine outside of powerpoint, but when I go in presentation
mode, I
cannot hear the music.
The same powerpoint file plays fine on another machine. On my
laptop
it doesnt play in presentation mode. Other audio files play fine on
the external speakers or earphones on the laptop.
