nk2 address & data file recovery?

I have recently reformated my hard drive and reload a fresh copy of Outlook
2003. Before doing so, I saved a copy of the address book and data files to
an external hard drive. I was unsuccessful in trying to import them or
trying to swap files between the C; and E: directories. Therefore I can not
access my calendar or email information. Is there any hope or am I toast?

If you saved your PST files (main and archive) you're most likely okay, since
these contain your Contacts, e-mail folders, calendar, etc.

But if you saved something else, then yes, you're probably toast.

BTW, the NK2 file that you reference in the Subject of your post, is the file
that is used as the autocompletion (aka nickname) cache.

Post back with exact details of what files you saved and how you saved them
(i.e., was Outlook closed, etc.)

David,

Thanks for your expeditious reply. Upon enabling an external hard drive, I
opened the "my computer" window and right clicked on the outlook files
(mentioned below) from my existing outlook program on the C: drive and
selected the "send to" option, placing them in a directory on the "E" drive.
The file names are as follows; user name.wa^ , user name.wab , outcmd.dat
, outlook.nk2 , outlook.srs , outlook.xml , outlprnt.

I think I am toast.

The best insurance against losses like this is by having a recent backup of your
PST file(s). See this link for more info:

Outlook 2003/2002 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...3a-b7d0-4b16-b8af-5a6322f4fd01&displaylang=en

I have mine setup to automatically backup on a daily schedule. This happens
after Outlook is opened and then closed, but only once in a 24 hour period.

Note: The location of your Outlook files that you mentioned is not normal for
Windows 2000/XP systems. See this link for more info on their location and
usage:
http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm

Good luck!

David,

Thanks again for you consistent replies. I will make note of the procedures
going forward. Not to beat this to death, but in reviewing the extensions on
my data files, (dat, xml, nk2, srs), would it be at all possible to recover
the personal data files (emails and calendar information) through outlook or
any other program? Ie; I was able to open one of the files in Excel and view
some email addresses, although they were scrambled throughout the file in a
maze of chicken scratch, but recoverable with a little love and patience.

Sorry but no, AFAIK the information you're after is all stored in the PST files,
which are gone.

Note that if you were tinkering with the WAB file, this is not part of Outlook,
it is the address book for Outlook Express (a horse of another color).
