I suspect they use a software compression routine. I tried a similar one a couple of years ago. Certain items were faster - graphics for instance, but at a cost to the quality. Trying to download a 20mb driver file, showed no speed difference at all.
At the end of the day BB speeds on a 56K modem just ain't gonna happen.
