Having a problem with my coolscan when scanning b&w negs...ICE doesn't
seem to work with them..if i turn it on the image just comes out as a
contrasty mess...if i don't use it the image is covered in marks...
No problems when using ICE in colour stuff...
Any ideas?
Thanks!!!

ICE does not always work with B&W images (nor does it always work with
Kodachrome).. The IR channel reads the grains of silver as flaws in the
image.
Remove the scratches with your image processing software.

Yes - RTFM, specifically page 53 of the Software Manual on the CD-ROM.

ICE does not work at all with traditional B&W film and can have problems
with some batches of Kodachrome. In fact, any emulsion which has a
significant residual silver oxide content in the emulsions will have
problems because silver oxide does not tramsmit the infrared light used
by ICE (or visible light either - that's why its black!).

I run recently in similar mystery with Ilford...
Indeed, with silver-halide based material you must not use ICE.
But materials like Kodak T400max, which are de facto monochromatic
negatives with a similar sepia/orange look, work fine with ICE.
