hoping someone could help a novice.
i'm getting DSL & need to know if i have a NIC installed.
I'm running windows XP. can anyone please tell me how i
can find out if i have one? there seems to be a port on
the back of my pc that would accept. i can't locate my
paperwork from when i purchased the pc.
may be a dumb question- don't kill me.
thanks.

If you have a NIC installed the port on the back is a bigger version of what
a phone modem connector looks like. It will take CAT5 cable so check the
connector size on a CAT5 cable.

No problem - the network card should have an RJ45 jack in it. Looks like a
modem/phone connection, but bigger.
Look in control panel, system, hardware, device manager under Network
Adapters ....see what you see there, to confirm.

thanks for the help.
i found the following:
Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection
i'm assuming that this is my NIC ??
the jack is there- is this all i need?
again, thanks for the help

Yep - you need that. And TCP/IP. Before you plug your computer into the DSL
modem, enable the firewall by right-clicking on the network card (start,
settings, network connections - find the connection & right click),
properties, advanced, tick the box for the firewall.
