I have been using Forte Agent for several years and the newer versions
seem to be getting a little complicated to use. I will be going to
Vista before long and thought maybe it would be a good time to try a
new news reader. Maybe a few people in here could recommend some to
try out. I don't like windows mail and would rather try something
else. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The free version is also being withdrawn!

I don't understand why people don't like Windows mail/Outlook Express
apart from a kneejerk reaction to all things Microsoft. What is wrong with
the product, apart from the spellchecker being US English?

Try Thunderbird which is free and has a proper spellchecker.

I have always liked 40tude Dialog from http://www.40tude.com/dialog/ as a
good newsreader.

I use Gravity - http://mpgravity.sourceforge.net/

I've tried a lot of readers and Gravity does everything I need a reader to
do and it's easy to use.

Windows Mail has quite a few bugs. It's not as good as Outlook
Express 6!

I use Windows Mail and haven't noticed any bugs. Could you
elaborate please?

Start with the fact that it's not GNKSA compliant, that *should* stop
anyone from using it.

http://www.xs4all.nl/~js/gnksa/gnksa-evaluations.html

Notice it encouraged you to top post? That's another reason not to use
it or at least run Quote Fix.

http://home.in.tum.de/~jain/software/oe-quotefix/

The sigdash is broken, I think Quotefix takes care of that.

There's more, much more.

Also, be aware that if you post in certain newsgroups your post won't
be seen by some of the more knowledgeable and helpful people as their
newsreader automatically killfiles anyone posting from OE or Google
Groups.

See http://blinkynet.net/comp/uip5.html for more information on the
latter.

Import messages from Windows Mail and Outlook Express 6 into Windows
Mail. Merge imported messages into local folder. Selecting Show All
Messages all messages are visible. Selecting Group Messages by
Conversation and imported messages do not display.

The ability to compact manually is no longer available.

Lot's of users have encountered problems trying to send mail.

Problems deleting mail.

I have a problem whereby headers and bodies are not glued together.
If you get folder corruption (that's what it seems to be ) the
solution was resolvable but now I cannot presently figure out an
answer.

The new Help is poor.

Nothing in that article about Windows Mail, only Outlook Express from a
MS standpoint, so nothing relevant there.

Windows Mail allows for easy configuration of either having your reply
above, or below the original message so OE-QuoteFix is no longer needed
for that functionality.
The sigdash is broken, I think Quotefix takes care of that.

This was fixed in OE quite a while ago, and Windows Mail handles this
properly.
There's more, much more.

More with what, OE or Windows Mail - the topic of this branch of the thread.

Probably based on the same ignorance that you applied in your post.

I guess no newsreader, regardless of quality, can help people actually
read the message properly before they reply.

Windows Mail IS Outlook Express with a few revisions and a name change.
It still fails to meet GNKSA requirements.

Either, they're one and the same.

I knew OE and Windows Mail were one and the same, you apparently
didn't?

Talk about ignorance, you did give a great demonstration! ;-)

Windows Mail is clearly a modified version of Outlook Express but
some changes are significant, notably the way the message database
is maintained.

Not everyone is concerned as you are whether it meets GNKSA
requirements.
Either, they're one and the same.

didn't?

That argumentative. As it stands, whilst I like some of the new
features, others are not in my view an improvement. I also have some
reservations regarding the stability of Windows Mail which I do not
have regarding Outlook Express.

No, they are not. Windows Mail is a new version of OE with many of the
issues you cited fixed. So applying old OE flaws to Windows Mail where
many of those types of issues have been addressed is not a valid comparison.

With Windows Mail being a fairly major upgrade compared to OE, it has
its own set of new issues that need to be dealt with.

Indeed. It appears that "GNKSA" is just a few net cop vigilantes
with an axe to grind.
What authority appointed them?

Gerry Cornell said:

Every one should be. Standards were devised to help people, sorta like
everybody drive on the right (or left) side of the road. When
standards are ignored you get a wreck such as Usenet has become.
That argumentative.

Check version numbers, Windows Mail is a minor revision. It's still
6.0.xx
I also have some reservations regarding the stability of Windows
Mail which I do not have regarding Outlook Express.

I didn't know there were stability issues, but I've not used it other
than to configure it, run it and decide it wasn't for me.

XS11E said:
Very minor upgrade, check version numbers.

Version numbers are irrelevant. I look at amount of change introduced
and from that standpoint it is a fairly major upgrade.
