This has been going on forever and really isn't a problem. Ever since I've
started coming to msnews.microsoft.com, a lot of the "author" names show up
as "=?Utf-8?B?VmFzdSBLcmlzaG5hbXVydGh5?=" or some variation of that. They
all start with "=?Utf-8?B?" and vary from there.
I use XNews. Is this an Xnews glitch or does everyone get those?
Example at http://www.mewnlite.com/newsgroup.jpg

Hi Menno,

I use XNews. Is this an Xnews glitch or does everyone get those?
Example at http://www.mewnlite.com/newsgroup.jpg

I did some Google (Web) and Google Groups (Newsgroups) searches,
namely for the search queries:
xnews unicode
and
xnews "utf-8"

It seems that XNews doesn't support Unicode/UTF-8 :(

For instance:
<http://groups.google.pt/[email protected]&rnum=10>

However, there may be a solution: one of thread mentions an utility
called "MIME Proxy" that you use *with* XNews to show Unicode
characters:

How to make xnews display unicoded chars?
<http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=...=Xns936A59EA7926piziwolfsinacom%40130.133.1.4>

The "MIME Proxy" utility can be found at:
<http://www.lamaiziere.net/mp_pagen.html>

I don't use XNews or MIME Proxy, so I can't give you any personal
input about it.

Good luck!

Thanks for the pointers. Their links are all in italian or french
though... :-)
So far I've tried XNews and WinVn... I'll see what Outlook Express
does....

Hi again Menno!

Thanks for the pointers. Their links are all in italian or french
though... :-)

You're welcome :)

It's true that most links are in Italian and in French.

But the "MIME Proxy" page that I mentioned *is in English*. It may be
worth a look:

So far I've tried XNews and WinVn... I'll see what Outlook Express
does....

Yes, Outlook Express should deal with Unicode/UTF-8 with no problem.

I use Forte Agent - http://www.forteinc.com/ - which also deals well
with Unicode/UTF-8. I have used several versions of Agent in several
years and I'm pretty happy with it. But it's not perfect: it still
doesn't support multiple news servers (although it *will* when version
2.1 is released). For now, I have several Agent configurations for
different servers (pointing to different folders):

Mozilla Thunderbird is also a popular e-mail and news reader:

Anyway, if you happen to be looking for newsreaders, there are some
lists in the Web. For instance, there is:
http://www.aspipes.org/faq/downloads.html

Good luck ... and have fun trying some newsreaders! :)
