Newsreader for Google?

H

howard schwartz

As is well known, Google probably has the most extensive archive of fairly
recent newsgroups and news posts, short of using some commercial usenet news
service with a lot of disk space and servers.

But it does not permit one to easily follow a newsgroup, since there are no
post IDs that get updated to a file like newsrc when you use Google.

Is there any sistem of using Google to ``follow'' the posts of a newsgroup
like one can do with ordinary newsreaders and news servers? I thought there
was some software that attempted to do this by ID-ing google posts by date and
time.

Maybe you'll like using groups-beta.google better!

I am not sure how the service below helps you follow a group (?), although it
has an option to follow a topic within a group. The statistics, I suppose can
be used somehow to figure out which posts you have read -- but I am not sure
what a practical way to do this would look like

Yes, this Google service is interesting.
I like the simple stats page, too-

I don't know if I truly understand your intentions. If you would read
news with Google just like you would do with a common news reader you
only need to browse to the wanted groups:

Open http://groups.google.com in your browser and either enter the
group name (e.g. alt.comp.freeware) in the search field or click
your way through to it ('alt' + sometimes 'next fifty groups' until
you get 'alt.comp' and so on).

You can jump to a group simply by entering its name following the
below mentioned syntax:

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=alt.comp.freeware

This way you can bookmark your most often used groups. The results are
sorted threaded where the thread with the newest answers will be find
top most.

Most annoying problems are - you can't filter threads this way; and you
only see you previously visited messages by looking on the changed
link color in your browser window. To ensure this beeing useful you
have to click to *any* message in threaded view rather than just
scrolling down... (And sure you have to set the 'link mark timeout' to
a reasonable value.)

Is it really? It's certainly not well known here. A lot op posts don't
show up on Google. Google is NOT a usenet service, it is Google. If
you want usenet use an NNTP server.

Still, it can be nice to browse newsgroups from your browser, even if they
miss some posts.
And actually IHMO the Google-archives are well-known here.
Other ways to browse ACF are:

True, it's absolutely no replacement for a decent newsreader. I just wanted
to point out it can be useful for a quick look-up or look-back. Sometimes I
find myself in the situation when I need an URL or a program which I know
has been posted before. In that case it's handy to be able to browse ACF
that way, as you can read the user-opinions as well.

Only for 7 days and you can't search for it.
(IIRC, I saw 6 days elsewhere.)

"Google supports the 'X-No-archive: yes' header. Any message that
contains this text in either the header or the first line of the
message will be displayed on Google Groups for seven days, after which
it will no longer be displayed. In addition, messages marked with
‘X-No-archive: yes' will never be searchable."
