Hi all. Is there a newreader, or better yet, an app. that can filter posts
using the NNTP posting host as one of the parameters? Have been using XNews
for years so an app that sits between my NG host and XNews would be nice.

Thanks.

If you want to filter out specific NNTP posting hosts, then the Xnews
score.ini file is all you need.

Example ...... to filter your post use
NNTP-Posting-Host: 69.222.144.3

Sorry, my bad. Xnews doesn't do it. One of the other newsreaders I have
tried out did, can't remember which one though. I much prefer Xnews.

nFilter will do what you want acting as a proxy.

Someone posted about NewsProxy [a.k.a., nfilter] (freeware) a few weeks
ago. I downloaded it and am using it with 40tude Dialog newsreader. So
far, it has been very effective in eliminating the crap posts.

http://www.nfilter.org/faq.html (download and info)

http://www.aapcsite.plus.com/newsproxy.html (install and run info)

(More hits on Google search of "newsproxy")

have tried out did, can't remember which one though. I much prefer
Xnews.

Despite what it says in the manual, Xnews was updated to do this in
version 5.01.10:

" + Yes, Virginia, you can now score on non-standard headers such as
NNTP-Posting-Host. By non standard headers, I mean those that are
NOT included in XOVER) . As with everything Xnews, there are
caveats:

1) Your server must support the XHDR command. As I understand it,
most do. However, some servers (e.g., Typhoon) only support the
standard XOVER headers, so you still can't score on anything other
than the standard headers (subject, from, message-id, lines, xref,
and now, bytes).

2) It takes time to download those extra headers.

3) I don't save them in storage, so if you have
ScoreStoredArticles=1, scores with non standard headers will not
work on stored headers.

4) If you edit the score file while a group is opened and add one or
more non- standard headers, those scores will not take effect til
next time you open the group.

5) I'm sure I added a bunch of bugs."

So Xnews can score on non-standard headers, but it's dependant upon
the server sending that header. To see if the server sends it, you'll
have to telnet into your newsserver ( telnet news.blah.com 119 ) and
typing the command list overview.fmt . Many news hosts won't send the
non-standard headers due to the extra processing required, but it's
worth a try.

Doesn't seem to want to work with XP. Thanks anyway.

The problem is that Flagging doesn't work correctly with Xnews, since
it refreshes the headers when the bodies are pulled...

It does, but two thing have to occure...

First, only overview headers are saved in the mBox file format, so you
can't apply extended headers to any saved messages. Full messages
bodies are saved in a seperate file, but do to size limitations this
file is not used to filter.

Second, your newsserver must support XHDR, the ability to pull headers
entries that are not within the overview. This much is true for
nFilter/newsproxy as well...

Just thought I'd reply to my own post. I'm giving 40tude a try, I'm
impressed with the flitering capabilities.

According to this web site (which includes the download), it does.

The installer is a 16bit program, or at least on that XP doesn't like.

You can "unzip" the 1.2.0 version using any Unzip program to a temp
directory, then install it from there...

There's also the "enfilter" version avalable, which I know works:

There was a problem with either a missing byte or an added one at the
end of some copies of the nFilter installer. IIRC, Windows would balk
and call it not a valid Win32 executable. Some people here figured it
out and found a working installer, but I guess they aren't reading this
thread. Googling the group should turn up leads. (Sorry, I can't
recall which posters were involved in that thread.)

For future reference it would be nice if someone added the info to the ACF wiki. . .

I saved this in my bulging Treepad file (it's not in Google's Archive):

Same as setting it up under any other OS.

IIRC the 1.2.0 install file at the site is 1 byte short, which throws up an error msg in XP. (Dunno
about 2k). 98SE doesn't care.

It is a self extracting archive so extract it to some folder or other
and run it as a standalone.
Or - so I am told by techies - you can add a byte to it somehow or other
and run it as an install file.
When I did it on XP I just unzipped it.

There is a site somewhere that has a non corrupted file. I could dig it
out for you if you wish. Easiest is to just unzip this one and run it.

Using NFilter with FA, your only real filtering option is to drop posts
on the server.
But if that is what you want... :-)

The site referenced in the post is: http://www.nfilter.org/
