newsgroup access

How is it that I am able to post a message here, but on
most of the other newsgroups it keeps asking me to 'sign -
in' with net passport ?

You are posting via CDO, why.....I don't know. As per your issue, which
other newsgroups, specifically?

the other newsgroups I am referring to that ask for a net
passport signin to post, are the ones accessed by start >
help and support >>>> newsgroups...
one example
is :http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroup
s/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

is this newsgroup (the one I am writing this message in) a
separate entity from that XP newsgroup or is their a
relationship ?

Also, what is the 'CDO' that you mentioned in your reply ?

p.s. I got to this newsgroup from a desktop shortcut I
created over a year ago, but I don't remember using net
passport back then either.

X-Newsreader: Microsoft CDO for Windows 2000

It's the newsreader that you are using to access the newsgroups.

Do yourself a favour and install a proper one and set it up then you won't
have these problems anymore.
