Why not have the best of both ... a REAL dedicated newsreader and a REAL
dedicated email client ? Do you really expect a combined program to satisfy
both needs ?
Actually, yes. I have been using Turnpike for about 8-9 years quite
happily, until I bought this notebook and since then Turnpike keeps
crashing. I've tried all sorts to fix it but no luck yet. :(

You may want to investigate the exporting capabilities (if any) of turnpike.

Apparently I need to export thus: Mail in Berkeley mailbox format and
News in Batch news. Trouble is, I don' know how the exports arrive in
other programs i.e. does the export retain the original layout etc.

Yes, AIUI. If you use Demon as your ISP you get it free, otherwise you
pay. I'm not sure but it is about £15 or so.

Thanks. I was going to download it, but now I know there's no use.

Although it costs a bit it really is a very good program! I'm still
trying to get it to work!

(wandering OT ... won't be long ...)
Hi Roger. I seem to remember you inhabiting the
demon.ip.support.turnpike group? Are you familiar with reverting back to
TP5?

Yup, but for only long enough to convince me to keep TP5.01. I'm still
with Win98se and all this shell integration of TP6x gives me the
willies, and as a result have only the sketchiest experience of
reverting. Quite honestly I don't think I had TP6x installed for long
enough to have anything to export.
I've had a look at Demon Announce but I'm not sure about the
process. Are they saying that if I export my TP6.04 files in Berkeley
mailbox for news and batch news then TP5 will 'recover' them in their
correct format?

Don't see why not. TP5x handles Berkeley format.
Also, the procedure says 'Restore the Turnpike 5 files from your
backups'. What TP 5 files are they talking about, as surely I only have
TP6 files in the TP folder at the moment? Or do they mean the exported
Berkeley files and batch news files?

Er, ah ... pass.
I would dearly love to stay with TP but I've had 2 'Terminate' crashes
this morning already. :(

If you like its plain interface you'll like TP5.01, and as it only
writes a file association to Registry I don't see why you couldn't
install TP5.01 in parallel with your existing TP6x, and have a dabble
with importing/exporting stuff.

Sorry I can't be more help. I see you have posted in dist and I see the
normal withering response from the experts. Merciless lot. :-)

Cheers

PS what about Free Agent? I quite liked it, but not as much as TP.

I've been using Turnpike for nearly 10 years and haven't found anything
better. I'm looking for alternatives because Demon have decided to stop
development. So fat I haven't seen any other Windows programs that
handle mail and news as well.
