Newly added record is not auto-numbered

Via the switchboard, users can open an Inquiry form in Add mode, where they
can input a new record.
When they're done they can click a Save button on the form (the standard one
offered by the Command Button Wizard).
I have a Ref field which is an autonumber and this works fine if you input
the details and then click the add new record asterisk in the tentative
append bar at the bottom of the page. A Ref number is created for the record,
no problem.
However, clicking on the Save button does not activate the autonumber. The
record is saved, but no Ref is created
How can do?

If you are using a bound form with bound fields, the autonumbered Ref field
should be populated when you type the first character into that record.

Please clarify the situation for me - what you are describing doesn't make
sense. If it's bound to an autonumber field and you add a new record, it
gets autonumbered. Full stop.
