What's the procedure for setting a reminder? All I can see is to make
an appointement and put whatever you want to be reminded about in the
subject line.

Is that it or is there a better way? A simple reminder like 'Pick up
the kids after 1pm' is what I'm talking about.

Also, is there a way to get Outlook to delete reminders/appointements
etc after a given time, say 24hrs later so that there's no history of
anything in the calender?

You can use a Task for this as well. In combination with the New Item line
it goes quite fast.
