newbie font question

I've seen this addressed but not totally answered in other
posts. I've put all these really sexy fonts on my page and
obviously other people aren't seeing them because they
don't have the font installed locally. I do not want to
use boring MS fonts, I want to use the slick ones. As this
is a table and I am using several different fonts, I also
do not want to have to create a tiny little image for each
cell. This is a roster, it is very long, and there is a
lot of data in it. How do I force this font down to remote
viewers?

You can embed the font but you really don't want to go there ... it's not
practical and viewers won't like it. Just use you gif-fonts for special
headings etc... not the lists. You could make a whole list of roster names
into a gif-font and insert it into a cell. Be sure to optimize it!!!
I wonder what other suggestions you will get here?

....plus, even if you use the embedding tool (which is very quirky and
doesn't work in all browsers) the user must actually download and install
the fonts to their machine. I wouldn't and many won't.

Unfortunately its a fairly dynamic roster, so the one
single image isn't really going to be practical, I'd
rather create separate images for each name so that
they're easily added/removed. And the fonts are really too
sexy not to use everywhere, so I guess I've got a whole
lot of cutting and pasting to do. Thanks for the
clarification.

Steve,

If you insist on using your sexy fonts, you may want to consider using a
graphic generation tool on the server side. I'm not sure if you're familiar
with any server side scripting languages such as Perl, ASP, or PHP, but if
you are, then you should be able to find a library or plug-in that can
generate the names on the fly, or at least every time you change the list.
Personally, I've never worked with this type of tool so I can't offer any
specific suggestions.

If you do use graphics, realize that the page won't be searchable (Edit |
Find (on this page) - in IE) or indexable by search engines (probably not a
big problem in this case) and that visitors won't be able to resize the text
to make the page easier for them to read.
And the fonts are really too sexy not to use everywhere,

There are plenty of cool things you could be doing, but that doesn't mean
you _should_ do them. Although design is very important, sometimes
usability is the trump card.

My .02. Hope it helps.
